摘要

Based on the examination of surfaces and subsurfaces of scuffing test specimens, this article developes a scuffing factor, the ratio of the surface tangential traction to the temperature dependent shear strength of the material corresponding to the initial scuffing, and the scuffing failure mapping, which indicates the variation ranges of the parameters of material property, geometry, lubricant, and operating conditions, etc for scuffing failure. A set of the contour plots of the scuffing factors in the mapping show scuffing failure regions. The scuffing factor and the scuffing failure mapping reflect the interaction among the related mechanisms of wear, relevant parameters, and the inaccuracy in modeling. The research results indicate that the scuffing factor increases as the maximum asperity temperature, frictional coeffificient, and roughness increase. The effect of the radial clearance on the scuffing factor is not linear. The amplitudes of the scuffing factor are also influenced by surface roughness and frictional coefficient. They can be used for both of scuffing failure diagnosis and parameter design of friction pair, lubricant, and operation conditions. In order to built the more accurate and effective scuffing failure mapping, more related important parameters of material property, geometry, lubricant, and operating conditions etc are needed and their number and value need to be optimized, and more accurate numerical models and better numerical tools should be used.
